The Myth Of The Clutch Gene

Writer: Jack McveighJack Mcveigh

“He does it again.

Another big shot by McVeigh.”

If I was not careful, I could start telling myself false stories.

Such as:

- I have a clutch “gene”.

- I have an innate ability to make important shots.

But these stories would not be the truth.

My ability to make clutch shots has come from 1000s of failures:

- Game 4 of the NBL Grand Final

- Multiple times against the Brisbane Bullets

- NBL1 games

- Every day in practice

The clutch gene is not built by makes, nor is it something someone is born with.

The skill of performing under pressure comes from putting yourself in the position to succeed over and over again.

Then learning from the time you fail.
